The Gaples Institute Supports Health and Hope for Women in Need

Fran Quarm is on a mission to empower women experiencing poverty—by filling their plates with nutrient-dense foods.

Fran is the Director of Food Programs at Rosie’s Place, a multi-service sanctuary of hope and support in Boston for poor and homeless women. Her team prepares and serves 170 healthy meals daily, and distributes fresh and non-perishable groceries to more than 1200 women and their children every week.

To help her staff build strong knowledge of nutrition and healthy eating strategies, Fran asked them to complete the Gaples Institute’s interactive public nutrition learning program.

“The more our team knows about nutrition, the better we’re able to encourage healthy choices and give our guests healthy, well-balanced foods.”

“The more our team knows about nutrition, the better we’re able to encourage healthy choices and give our guests healthy, well-balanced foods,” Fran explains.

She chose the Gaples Institute’s course because “the lessons are well organized, and the learning is easy and quick”—important factors, since time and resources are tight. The staff at Rosie’s Place are tasked with serving more women than ever before, as food insecurity in Massachusetts has doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our hats are off to Fran and the Rosie’s Place staff! We’re honored to play a part in helping them strengthen women in their journey to health and hope.
