A new survey and analysis, co-authored by Gaples Institute Executive Director Stephen Devries, MD, has shown that a majority of cardiologists refer less than 10% of their patient panel to dietitians or nutritionists—despite diet being a leading factor in cardiovascular disease.
The paper, published in the International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention, indicated that most cardiologists think patients don’t want to make dietary changes—a perception that doesn’t match patient survey data.
The analysis also found that cardiologists who receive continuing education in nutrition are significantly more likely to make referrals to dietitians and other nutrition specialists.
